Sexy doesn't have an age

In a world where youthfulness is often equated with beauty, the natural process of aging is frequently met with apprehension, especially for women. So many discussions around aging women focus on wrinkles and grey hair, while one area remains largely overlooked is the changing appearance: breasts. Despite the allure and sensuality that comes with maturity, societal perceptions often fail to recognize the beauty of ageing breasts, particularly in women over 50.

The Realities of Ageing Breasts

Breasts, like any other part of the body, undergo significant changes over time. One of the primary drivers of breast aging is the loss of elasticity in the skin and connective tissues. This results in a gradual decrease in breast firmness and may contribute to sagging, particularly in women with larger breasts or those who have experienced multiple pregnancies. Hormonal fluctuations brought on by menopause can also lead to reduction in breast density and glandular tissue, leading to a loss of fullness and volume.

And if all that weren’t enough, women in the USA have a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer. Breast cancer survivors face additional challenges related to body image and self-esteem, particularly if they have undergone mastectomy or breast reconstruction surgery. It's essential to recognize and support the unique needs of these women, including providing access to specialized post-surgical bras and lingerie that offer comfort, support, and aesthetic options that help them feel confident and beautiful.

Regardless of the reasons, breasts change all the time. It’s the process of simply being alive. And women over 50 deserve the same level of attention and care in the lingerie world as people who have experienced fewer changes.

Normalizing Representation in Media

Mainstream media has a very narrow view of what beauty is – it prioritizes youthfulness and perfection, contributing to the marginalization of older women and their bodies. But women over 50 exude confidence, wisdom, and a unique allure that is unmatched by youth alone. Embracing the beauty of aging breasts means embracing the full spectrum of femininity and rejecting the notion that attractiveness has an expiration date. By celebrating the natural changes that occur with age, we empower women to embrace their bodies at every stage of life and redefine beauty on their own terms.

The Role of the Lingerie Industry

While strides have been made in recent years to promote body positivity and inclusivity within the lingerie industry, there is still much work to be done. The retail market often overlooks the 50+ demographic, focusing instead on catering to younger consumers with limited size ranges and designs that prioritize aesthetics over comfort and support.

Empowering Women of All Ages

It's time for the lingerie industry to step up and embrace the diversity of women's bodies, regardless of age or medical history. We need better access to bras for a diverse range of ages, bodies, and needs. Marketing campaigns and retailers have an opportunity to send a powerful message of inclusivity and empowerment.

At Rubies Bras we have a lot of mature clients who are over 50 and are ready for a bra that can accommodate all the changes their breasts and bodies have gone through. Some of the issues they share at their fitting include:

  • Changing breast shape
  • Sagging
  • Thin skin
  • A drop in breast density
  • Changes from surgery
  • Wire intolerance
  • Gaping in bras that used to fit them

We take all of these things into consideration when making a custom bespoke bra that will fit flatter, and function for their bodies, just as they are.

3 Ways We Create A Custom Bra That Embraces Breast Changes

When we create a custom bra for our clients, we’re not trying to cover them – we try to help them feel beautiful in the new breasts they have and loving their bodies.

  1. Selecting the right style. When it comes to aging breasts, the biggest change is often a lack of fullness. So we select styles that will lay flat against the body and avoid creating any gaping holes. And for those that have gone their whole life with a wired bra, we love to help them transition to a wire-free bra that’s exceptionally comfortable and fits better than any wire bra they’ve ever purchased.

  2. High quality fabrics. We source fabrics that are soft, breathable, and supportive. We can line with soft sheer mesh, bamboo, or organic cotton for another layover of comfort.

  3. Perfect fit. This is ultimately the thing that makes a bra the most comfortable it can be. It’s hard to get right out of the box because all breasts and chests are so different from each other. In our custom bra process, we make up to three adjustments for our clients so they have a chance to live and move in the bra and find exactly where small changes are needed to make it fit perfectly.

Sexy doesn’t have an age.

Society as a whole must recognize and celebrate the beauty of aging breasts and the women who possess them. We must challenge ageist stereotypes and embrace a more inclusive definition of beauty that values women of all ages and backgrounds. By doing so, we create a world where every woman feels seen, valued, and beautiful, regardless of her age, life experiences, or the biological changes her breasts may undergo.
