If you’ve ever set foot in a fitting room to try on a bra, you likely know that finding a perfect fit can be frustrating. Sometimes, it can seem downright impossible.
Knowing that fit frustration well, Canadian entrepreneur Ruhee Rajan set out to offer an alternative to the one-size-fits many bras on offer by most brands. Instead, her business, Rubies Bras, offers a custom fit.
We caught up with Rajan to learn more.
Q: For those who aren’t familiar, what is Rubies Bras?
A: Rubies Bras is a Canadian boutique bespoke bra company. Our vision is to arm you with bras that celebrate who you are so you can be your best self, which can only happen if you feel comfortable and confident in your skin. All our bras are 100-per-cent custom, meaning they are handmade to measure, from scratch, based on your own sizing and needs. We serve most of our clients through private virtual fittings, where we show you how to take measurements and help you select the right bra. In-person appointments are also available in our Edmonton and Toronto studios.
Q: What makes it unique?
A: Our entire model is unique because we are a made-to-order business, so everything we make is made-to-measure just for your body, your style, and your needs. And we are owned and operated right here in Canada, all by women. No unfair wages, no labour exploitation, no fast fashion practices, just five women operating a responsible and sustainable business that supports our local economy.
Q: Who is the target customer?
A: Our target customer are people with breasts who struggle to find a bra, or those who want their dream bra to come to life. We pride ourselves on being size-inclusive to all sizes and situations, including unique sizes, asymmetry, mastectomy, nursing, post-surgical, transgender, and many other marginalized communities that find themselves underserved with limited access to great bras. … A good bra can change your life and has changed the lives of our clients, eliminating shoulder and back pain, improving posture, and leaving you feeling comfortable and confident. Not to mention looking better in your clothes.
Q: Is there a ‘hero’ design in the range?
A: Our bestseller is definitely our wire-free Sahaara Bra. I designed this bra myself, after I dreamed of a simple wire-free triangle bra that everyone seemed to be wearing from big-box stores, but none fit my small frame-large bust body. The Sahaara Bra fits an AA all the way to an N cup, and can be customized in a wide range of colours and fabrics, including solid satin, sheer mesh, and lace, plus other optional features like front closure and foam lining.
Q: What is the price range?
A: Custom bras range from $900 to $2,500, depending on your needs, style, and fabric. This pricing includes: initial fitting, samples fitting, design creation, fabric sourcing, up to three rounds of adjustments, and the finished bra. You get a personal and special experience with us, while ensuring sustainable and responsible business practices within Canada and the U.S.
Crafting your custom bra involves significant time and effort, using premium fabrics and ethical production. The result is a long-lasting — five-plus years — perfectly fitting custom bra. Best of all, your money supports the women who craft your bra, with over 20 hours of work per piece. What better investment to make in yourself, and support women and our own economy at the same time. Once you go custom, you’ll never go back.
Q: And where can people learn more?
